Big Red Struggle

On Jan. 9, Cornell completed a weekend sweep of Merrimack, taking some of the pain out of the embarrassing 8-0 loss to Ohio State in the final of the Florida College Classic less than two weeks earlier. The wins brought the Big Red’s record to 11-2-2, putting it in a position for success that was better than just about everyone in the country, save for maybe Quinnipiac and Providence.

The offense was absolutely on fire during the first 15 games of the season, shooting 11.5 percent, despite only averaging 25.5 shots per game.

Yale’s Second-Half Rise

By now, if you’ve paid any attention to the ECAC, you’ve seen that Yale’s been red-hot over the past several weeks.

Since losing to Princeton 4-2 on Dec. 5, Yale posted a 13-1-2 record, bringing its overall mark to 18-5-4 on the year. The surge elevated the team to second place in ECAC play, with a 13-4-3 mark, and a guaranteed first-round bye in the ECAC conference tournament.

The Bulldogs’ stellar play lately also catapulted them to seventh in the Pairwise rankings, one of four ECAC teams currently in an at-large position (Quinnipiac, Harvard and Cornell being the others).

Yale also has an ability to lock up a share of the Ivy League title on Friday, along with Harvard, if it defeats Princeton at Baker Rink. The win would guarantee a second-straight Ivy League men’s hockey title for the New Haven school. Continue reading
